"In My Tender Care"
(2023)
“In my tender care” is an expanded cinema installation chronicling the estrangement between Charlie and his mother. Originating from a screenplay, the installation seeks to give agency back to the audience by removing the chronology of a film’s timeline.
Consisting of animatronic talking mouths in a set, a floor to ceiling projection of computer generated animations, and two additional video works presented on CRT TV screens, “In my tender care” presents turning points and whole acts simultaneously, locked in scenes that are scattered across the room. Exploring each scene will expose more of the story and they can be viewed in any order.
Characters, who take on the forms of disembodied floating mouths and digital humans, inherit empathy through the fidelity of their animator. As artificial forms, these characters are pushed to encounter the limits of what emotions their bodies can perform. By juxtaposing a characters’ limited ability of expression with their desire to do just that, one presents clearly artificial depictions of humans as closely to their real counterparts.
